Women, Religion and the State in Contemporary Turkey

Based on extensive fieldwork in Turkey, the study disentangles the Turkish state’s attempt to standardize a multifaceted female religious participation.

In using the feminization of the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) as a prism through which to understand the significance of a renewed presence of Islam in the public realm, the work casts light on a broader reformulation of religious services for women and families in Turkey, and pinpoints how this pervasive moral support has been able to penetrate and reshape even secular spaces.

Chiara Maritato is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Cultures, Politics & Society at the University of Turin. Previously she was Assistant Professor at the Center for Southeast European Studies (CSEES) at the University of Graz & Post- Doctoral Visiting Fellow at the Stockholm University Institute for Turkish Studies (SUITS).
