Wonder Woman's Themyscira and Black Panther's Wakanda—powerful, hidden lands, with immense and nearly unimaginable resources—have allowed industrial capitalism to bring the planet to the brink of catastrophe, without taking action. Iron Man and Batman both invent effortless clean energy, then just throw it away. Superman famously hails from a dead world, but has essentially no interest in saving our dying one. Why does superhero fantasy intersect so poorly with ecological thought? Why don't superheroes ever think about the environment? And what might an ecologically conscious superheroism look like in an era of ever-worsening floods, droughts, fires, and storms with no historical precedent, and no one able to swoop in and save us from ourselves?
