Joining a small community of diverse users in a flexible research environment: Beta Masaheft and Ethiopian Studies

Abstract

What is a Research Environment and what should it do? For Beta maṣāḥǝft: Manuscripts of Ethiopia and Eritrea (Schriftkultur des christlichen Äthiopiens und Eritreas: eine multimediale Forschungsumgebung), facilitating collaboration between scholars with diverse interests in the same objects (manuscripts from Ethiopia and Eritrea) is a core concern. I will offer insight into the solutions we have In this presentation, I will offer a review of the solutions we have implemented for making this constant dialogue happen daily and openly. I will describe how we use GitHub to give citable evidence to every vetted contribution; how TEI and RDF data interact to support diverse and research needs; how our Distributed Text Services API helps us serve partial texts and their multiple structures and collate with Collatex without having a canon; how Transkribus makes manuscripts more accessible to other projects, how we publish reusable data for scholars using Voyant tools; how Alpheios helps us connect lexicographic and textual resources and make more directly accessible resources like the Lexicon Linguae Aethiopicae.
