Legitimacy in a World without Rules

Public Lecture by Michael Ignatieff (Central European University)

The distinguished writer, historian, professor and politician Michael Ignatieff speaks on questions such as: How do we think about the legitimate use of political authority, both within but between states, in a world discovering that the so-called “rules based international order” has collapsed? How do we think about rebuilding the legitimacy of international institutions from the ruins left behind by the Russian invasion of Ukraine? How does Europe re-think democratic legitimacy on a continent where authoritarian populists win elections?

This opening and public lecture is part of the workshop "Ruling in a Wanton World: Arthur Applbaum’s Work and the Philosophy of Legitimacy Beyond the State".
