Cyrano de Bergerac

By Edmond Rostand adapted by Glyn Maxwell

We are proud to announce our upcoming production for the spring of 2024! The Pennyless Players return to the big stage with a truly classic tragic comedy: Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, in a new adaptation by English playwright Glyn Maxwell. Join us for this poetical masterpiece about the struggle with self-image, the tension between outer and inner beauty, and the power of language.

Journey to a Paris of artists, soldiers and nobility, where Cyrano de Bergerac has gained the reputation of a brilliant poet and a fierce swordsman. But due to his overly large nose, he lacks the self-confidence to express his love for the beautiful Roxane. She fancies the handsome but rather inarticulate soldier Christian de Neuvillette. Cyrano, convinced that he doesn’t stand a chance against this more attractive suitor, decides to help Christian write letters to Roxane. Through the eloquent poet’s passionate declarations, she falls madly in love with the supposed author. But with war looming on the horizon, the characters’ lives are about to take an unexpected turn in this romantic tale that is as tragic as it is hilariously witty.
