Brownbag: How a Bosniak Community Formed in Malaysia (1992-1995)

BB: Hamza Karčić - "How a Bosniak Community Formed in Malaysia (1992-1995)"

The aim of this presentation is to analyse the emergence of a Bosnian Muslim community in Malaysia during the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia and answer central questions of how and why this community formed in a distant Southeast Asian state. The community that developed there in the early 1990s included professionals, students, and concentration camp survivors and their families — the vast majority of whom arrived during the war, in late 1992 and early 1993. After the war ended, the community gradually began to disperse. Based mostly on interviews and primary sources, this research pieces together a narrative of the Bosnian Muslim community that existed in Malaysia during the war.
